Hello, folks. It being that time of year again--up from dawn to dusk, finishing final papers and assignments as the term draws to a close--the blog is on a bit of a break at the moment. We will be back in a couple of weeks with fun news on the upcoming Royal Bison Art and … Continue reading End of Term Update

Q&A with Jason Norman

March 18, 2018 / thebolotiecollective / Leave a comment

On February 27, Jason dropped by to give an informative guest talk on writing in Edmonton and opportunities for young or emerging writers. As a follow-up, we asked him a few questions about making it as a writer up here. BTC: While talking about the 40 Below anthologies, you mentioned that Edmontonians tend to get behind … Continue reading Q&A with Jason Norman

A Pride Week Reading List

March 11, 2018 / thebolotiecollective / Leave a comment

In celebration of Pride Week (March 12-16) at MacEwan, we've put together a reading list of books with LGBT characters, content, and themes. It's by no means exhaustive or authoritative--there's plenty out there to choose from--but the books below should bring some reading joy as winter slowly gives way to spring. Rubyfruit Jungle, Rita Mae … Continue reading A Pride Week Reading List

YEG Lit: March Events

March 4, 2018March 6, 2018 / thebolotiecollective / Leave a comment

Somehow it's March already. With just over a month to go until the end of the school year, it's tempting to sit here and wonder where the time went. Eight months when you're a kid seem to take forever to pass; not so, when you're busy adulting. Then again, when we think back to September … Continue reading YEG Lit: March Events

Looking Ahead to March

February 25, 2018 / thebolotiecollective / Leave a comment

With a new month around the corner, it's time to highlight a few publishing deadlines that are fast approaching. As usual, the parameters are short fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry based in Canada (sometimes, but not necessarily, restricted to Canadian citizens and residents.) Dollar values are in loonies. Click on the links for full and … Continue reading Looking Ahead to March

February 10, 2018February 10, 2018 / thebolotiecollective / Leave a comment

This Thursday, February 13 will be our Writing Intimacy Workshop with MacEwan writer-in-residence, Deborah Willis. With that in mind, we asked Deborah a few questions about the challenge of adding intimacy into our writing. BTC: What is it about intimacy/sex that makes it difficult or uncomfortable for many of us to write about? DW:  We … Continue reading Q&A with Deborah Willis

YEG LIT: February Events

February 4, 2018February 4, 2018 / thebolotiecollective / Leave a comment

The city's in the middle of a deep freeze. For many of us northerners, merely getting out of a warm bed on a chilly Sunday can be rather aggravating. But for those who are willing to brave the cold, a new month means plenty of new and fun events to look forward to. Here are … Continue reading YEG LIT: February Events

A Hockey Reading List

January 21, 2018 / thebolotiecollective / Leave a comment

The Bolo Tie Collective has been pretty busy these last few weeks with submissions and acquisitions for Volume 3 of our anthology. In the midst of all this hard work, it seems like a good time for another reading list, one focused on the here and now. With it being midwinter and just over the halfway point … Continue reading A Hockey Reading List

We acknowledge that the land on which we gather in Treaty Six
Territory is the traditional gathering place for many Indigenous
people. We honour and respect the history, languages, ceremonies
and culture of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit who call this territory
home.

The First People’s connection to the land teaches us about our
inherent responsibility to protect and respect Mother Earth. With this
acknowledgement, we honour the ancestors and children who have
been buried here, missing and murdered Indigenous women and
men, and the process of ongoing collective healing for all human
beings. We are reminded that we are all treaty people and of the
responsibility we have to one another.
